Wüfers Homemade Gourmet Dog Cookies Review 2023: Our Expert’s Opinion

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Wüfers a rating of 4.75 out of 5 stars.

Wüfers bakes and delivers homemade gourmet cookies straight to your house. This small business is based in London, Ontario and sources its ingredients from other local businesses. Wüfers creates beautiful themed dog cookie boxes for birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions. They can be excellent gifts or passed out as fun party favors for all the dogs in your life.

As with any pet product, Wüfers has its set of pros and cons. It’s important to note that all of Wüfer’s cookies share the same recipe and are flavored with applesauce, peanut butter, honey, and yogurt. So, if your dog isn’t particularly fond of these flavors, it may not enjoy these cookies. The recipe also contains wheat gluten, so it’s not for dogs with wheat allergies and gluten sensitivities.

We’ve had a generally positive experience with Wüfers. The cookies also received the seal of approval from our resident picky eater. Our honest review is here to let you know what you can expect from a box of Wüfers cookies.

    About Wüfers Products

Who makes Wüfers and where is it produced?

Wüfers was founded in 2017 and is a small business located in London, Ontario. The ingredients for the Wüfers cookies are sourced from Canada and the US, and the cookies are baked in the company’s bakery in London, Ontario.

Which Types of Dogs is Wüfers Best Suited For?

Wüfers’ cookies contains ingredients and flavors that many dogs like, such as peanut butter and applesauce. The cookies all have a crunchy texture, so if your dog enjoys munching on biscuits, there’s a good chance that it’ll be a fan of Wüfers’ cookies.

While Wüfers uses many natural ingredients, it does contain some foods that dogs with certain food allergies or sensitivities can’t digest. Some ingredients to be mindful of are wheat, whey, and dried skimmed milk. So, if your dog has a difficult time digesting wheat or dairy, these cookies may cause an upset stomach.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

Wüfers’ cookie recipe only contain ingredients that are deemed to be safe by the US Food and Drug Administration and the Association of American Feed Control Officials. Here are some key ingredients in Wüfers cookies.

Although wheat may have a bad reputation among some dog owners, it’s an ingredient that’s completely safe for dogs to eat. As omnivores, dogs can safely consume a decent amount of carbohydrates, and grain-free diets are actually under review by the FDA for potential links to canine heart disease¹.

The cookie recipe includes both whole wheat flour and wheat gluten¹. Whole wheat flour is a good source of fiber, B vitamins, iron, and zinc. So, unless your dog has a wheat allergy or has difficulty digesting fiber, it’s completely fine to add wheat-based foods into its diet in moderation.

Most dogs are fans of apples, so applesauce is a common natural ingredient used to flavor and bind biscuit dough. It’s unclear as to what quality applesauce Wüfers uses and if it contains any added sugars.

Unsweetened applesauce¹ can be a good source of fiber and several different vitamins and minerals, including potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

    Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is another food that many dogs simply can’t resist. It has a high fat content, and should be eaten in moderation, but it also has some health benefits. It’s a good source¹ of vitamin B6, vitamin E, niacin, manganese, and magnesium.

    Yogurt Chips

Wüfers uses melted yogurt chips as its decorative icing. Plain yogurt¹ made with whole milk can contain a lot of calcium, phosphorus, and riboflavin. It also has probiotics, which can help with digestion. While yogurt is nutritious, some dogs may have difficulty digesting it¹ and other dairy products due to lactose.

    Artificial Dyes

One ingredient to keep in mind is artificial food dyes. All the ingredients in Wüfers recipe are recognized as safe and used in safe quantities by the FDA. The dyes serve as just decorative purposes for people rather than dogs. So, if you prefer dog cookies containing natural ingredients only, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

    Themed Boxes

A box of Wüfers cookies can make any occasion feel extra special. Wüfers offers a rotating selection of holiday-themed cookie boxes throughout the year. These boxes are available well before the upcoming holiday so that you can place an order and receive your cookies right on time.

For example, I ordered Christmas cookies in November and received my box in early December. It ended up being the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season with my dog, and I loved that she could participate in the festivities with the rest of the family. With Christmastime coming to a close, you can be sure to see Valentine’s Day cookie boxes well in advance and have your dog feel extra loved come February.

Wüfers also has themed cookie boxes that are available year-round. You can find birthday cookie boxes and a “Get Well” box for any dogs that are feeling sick or recovering. These boxes are perfect for gifting to others and using as party favors. You can also purchase batches of smaller birthday cookies if you’re looking to increase your volume of cookies for a dog birthday party.

    Supporting a Small Business

Wüfers is a family-owned and operated business and takes great care to create beautiful dog cookie boxes for all kinds of occasions. They use locally sourced ingredients, and all their cookies are handmade and designed by hand.

You can definitely feel the benefits that comes with small businesses from Wüfers’ cookie boxes. Wüfers is a company that pays attention to detail and creates beautifully crafted cookies. Receiving a box feels special for dog parents, and dogs will love eating a tasty treat.

    No Options To Customize

As a relatively young small business, Wüfers doesn’t offer as many customizations as larger pet food companies. Wüfers currently has one cookie recipe that contains dairy products and wheat. Customers must also purchase cookie boxes as is, and there isn’t an option to request substitutions.

While Wüfers may not have the manpower of a larger pet food company, it does pay special care to each of its cookie boxes, so you’ll receive a carefully crafted box filled with homemade cookies.

    Wüfers Review

Wüfers dog cookies on white plate

The Night Before Christmas Cookie Box contains a total of 13 cookies and 4 treat cups. All the cookies are made with locally sourced human-grade ingredients. They’re all coated with yogurt and are thoughtfully decorated by hand. It’s the perfect festive holiday gift for dog parents, and there are plenty of cookies for multi-dog homes.

Each cookie is individually wrapped and has a shelf-life of 15 months from the date it was baked. So, you don’t have to worry about feeling rushed with feeding them to your dog.

While the cookies are fun and festive, some may be too big for small and toy breed dogs. They will have to be broken up, and the yogurt coating can make this messy.

    Our Experience With Wüfers

dog sitting near the Wüfers dog cookie box

I had a very positive experience with Wüfers. I ordered the Night Before Christmas Cookie Box for my 20-pound Cavapoo. I was initially a little hesitant with the ingredients because my dog has a sensitive stomach and a picky palette. She prefers meat-based treats and rarely eats biscuits made with just fruit, vegetables, and grains.

It was a lot of fun for me to open the box because of how beautifully the cookies were decorated. I was concerned that they would crack or break while being shipped, but all of them arrived intact. I could tell that a lot of thought was put into making each cookie, and they all fit in perfectly with the rest of the holiday decorations in our house. We also have a Christmas cookie decorating tradition, and I love that my dog could participate with us this year rather than just stare at us with puppy eyes while we’re enjoying our cookies.

Wüfers cookies also passed our picky dog’s taste test. She was a little hesitant about it first, but when we broke a small piece of the cookie, she took a couple sniffs before inhaling it. I was very impressed because she’s turned her nose away from many gourmet dog biscuits and cookies.

Regarding the price, the cookies were a little less than $3 each. I thought that this was fair as the cookies were a little cheaper than individual gourmet cookies sold at my local pet shop. Wüfers also provides free shipping over orders above $30 and offers promotions and discounts throughout the year.

The only issue that I had with these cookies is the size. Most of the cookies were too big for my dog to eat in one sitting. The hard, crumbly texture and yogurt coating made it a little difficult to break the cookies apart without creating a small mess. I’d love to see cookie boxes with smaller cookies for small and toy breeds in the future. However, the cookie size wasn’t too big of a deal for us because my dog happily licked up all the crumbs.

Wüfers creates cute cookies that people can appreciate, and many dogs will enjoy eating them. They’re also a great way to celebrate special occasions with your dog. Overall, these cookies provide a fun experience for both dogs and their parents, and you’ll be sure to celebrate and share some special memories together.
